Consumers Turn to Print, TV, Radio, Not Social Media, for New Brand Info

January 2012 -- Facebook has more than 800 million active users with more than 200 million added in 2011, Twitter now has 100 million active users every month with visitor growth up 60% this year, and marketers are increasingly using Facebook and Twitter to communicate with customers. With this said, consumers are most likely to learn about brands, products, or services from offline media, word-of-mouth and other online advertising, as opposed to social media. In addition, the majority of consumers do not mention companies and brands on social sites, reports eMarketer.

Offline and Non-Social Online Media Keeps Consumers Informed
AYTM Market Research finds consumers are typically not learning about new brands, products and services from social media. Only 6.5% of U.S. Internet users said they most frequently hear about new brands, products and services from social media, while 17.6% said they often do and 26.5% said they sometimes do. A quarter of respondents (26%) said they never hear about these new offerings via social media.
Offline channels, such as TV, print media and radio are the ways consumers most frequently discover new brands, products and services, while word-of-mouth and physical stores also play a role. Consumers most frequently or often first learn about new brands, products or services from offline media (50.9%) or word-of-mouth (48.9%) rather than social media like Twitter and Facebook (24.1%).

U.S. consumers state they also learn about new offerings more often from online advertising or online shopping sites than from social media sites.

Majority of Consumers on Social Media Do Not Mention Brands
In addition, AYTM Market Research reports that 57.8% of U.S. Facebook users had not mentioned a brand in their status updates as of October 2011. One in four (25.3%) commented on brands in a positive manner, 16.4% of status updates featured a mix of both positive and negative mentions, and just 0.5% of Facebook users posted only negative mentions about brands on Facebook.

Training Rebate Program

The MPIA wants to support your specific training needs

Professional development opportunities are an important part of keeping any organization functioning well, and we’re here to help. If you have a specific learning opportunity that you, or someone with your company wants to attend, then our Training Rebate Program (TRP) is for you!

The TRP has a simple approach:

Printers in Manitoba have thrived because they know their business, so one of the ways we will support you training needs is simply by helping fund what you know are some of the pressing learning opportunities that your company needs to address this year.

This user-friendly initiative is an industry priority that the MPIA Executive Director would be happy to assist you though any questions or problems.

Here’s how it works:

  1. MPIA members fill out this application form:
Download the MPIA Training Rebate Application Form (.pdf)
  2. The MPIA Board reviews the completed application.
  3. Within 30 days, you will receive notice concerning what subsidy you qualify for.
  4. After attending or holding your approved training event, we work with you to collect some feedback survey information from you and your staff.
  5. You receive a cheque in the mail to bring down the bottom line cost of staff training!

It's that Easy!

If you need assistance in assessing or delivering your organization’s training needs the MPIA has a number of resources available within our network of partners.

Depending on your needs, we can arrange the support of the Building Better Workplaces Program, or Workplace Education Manitoba to assist your organization free of charge. If you would like to explore these or other MPIA training opportunities, contact us at (204) 272-5022 or at mpia@live.ca.
